Protecting displaced people around the world

UNHCR operates in more than 120 countries around the world. Most of our staff is based in countries in Asia and Africa, the two continents that host and create the most refugees and internally displaced people.

Many of UNHCR’s global operations are emergency operations where we provide people in flight with life-saving assistance: shelter, food, clean water, sanitation and health care. We also register them, assist them with advice on asylum applications, and provide education and counselling. We arrange transport when necessary and support local integration or reintegration programmes, including projects for income generation rebuilding infrastructure.
