Towards a common system
Since 1999, the Member States of the European Union have adopted a number of important legislative measures with the aim of tackling the increasing asylum challenges at European level and establishing a Common European Asylum System with harmonized rules, procedures and conditions. Today European Union law and practice considerably influences the development of refugee protection both inside and outside the Union.
This section contains the main legal instruments that constitute the EU asylum acquis as well as a selection of other important documents.
