Intercultural dialogue with refugees
Tuesday 9, September 2008
Budapest, 9 September (UNHCR) - Joining the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. In 2008 the UNHCR Regional Representation for Central Europe identified Intercultural Dialogue as the regional WRD theme for Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Through this, UNHCR intended to create synergies with projects carried out in the framework of the Year of Intercultural Dialogue declared by the EU in 2008. Intercultural Dialogue addresses one of UNHCR's main protection concerns in the region: widespread xenophobic attitudes in host societies and the enormous difficulties refugees face when trying to integrate.
UNHCR's Regional Representation for Central Europe requested proposals from local NGOs in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia to carry out WRD activities. Romania and Bulgaria were not included yet, as they still had PI officers until June to carry out the activities locally.
The main criteria for successful projects were:
• communication plans that identify key target groups and maximum impact
• participation of refugees in the activities
• cooperation with partner organizations
• inclusion of other geographical areas apart from the national capitals.
